is it a good sign when a girl offers to come over 'to mess around with a a bunch of paint and get totally filthy'?

It's never a bad thing. There's the "You missed a spot" approach, the "Let's get you out of these paint-soaked clothes," and the "Pot of gold at the end of the rainbow" (requires painting a rainbow on your torso bending junkward.
